NORFOLK, VA. Vandeventer Black LLP is pleased to announce that Shalanda Franklin-Verdell has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Walter E. Hoffman Community Service Award. The annual Hoffman Award recognizes an outstanding young attorney who has contributed significant hands-on service to the community. The award is named after the Honorable Walter E. Hoffman, who served as a United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia for many years.
Shalanda concentrates her practice in creditors’ rights, general litigation, business transactions, bankruptcy and estate planning and administration.
Shalanda earned her J.D. from The College of William & Mary School of Law, where she received the Gambrell Professionalism Award, was president of the Black Law Students Association and a student member of the I’Anson Hoffman Inn of Court. She also studied abroad through the William & Mary Summer Law Program in Madrid, Spain. She earned her B.S. in Marketing from Pennsylvania State University, where she received the Bunton-Waller Fellowship and Schreyers Honors College Graduate awards.
Shalanda also has participated in many community service programs over the years, including Instructor for the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association (NPBA) Middle School Mock Trial Program (2009, 2010); Coordinator for the NPBA Legal Outreach Clinic (2010); Director and Treasurer of the Cobblestone @ Lee’s Mill Condominium Association Board of Directors (2008–present); Secretary of the South Hampton Roads Bar Association (2009–2010); and Volunteer for the William & Mary 1L Mock Interview Program (2010).
