Nash has been a partner with Vandeventer Black since 1985 and concentrates his law practice in maritime matters, representing shipyards, terminals and vessels.  His practice initially focused on insurance issues relating to disability matters but has expanded in later years to include all aspects of their business, most recently security as applied in that industry. Nash works with risk managers, human resource professionals and executives on preventive strategies and, if necessary, litigation.  His practice includes work with insurance carriers and self-insured businesses on claims filed pursuant to the Jones Act and Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act. He has litigated numerous matters before administrative agencies, federal district courts and courts of appeal and, in 2002, the United States Supreme Court.

In addition, over the last ten years, Nash has been asked to represent several death row inmates in federal habeas corpus litigation and clemency proceedings before the Governor of Virginia.

Nash received a B.A. from The College of William & Mary in 1976 and a J.D. from Tulane University School of Law in 1979, where he was the Notes and Comments Editor for The Tulane Maritime Lawyer.

He is a Proctor in The Maritime Law Association of the United States and is Secretary of the Standing Committee on Stevedoring, Marine Terminals and Shoreside Services (2006). He is a member of the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute (SEALI) where he recently spoke on the Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC). He has previously published articles with SEALI and in the Tulane Law Review.  He serves on the Executive Board of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia and is a member of the Mayor's Commission to End Homelessness.
