Mike is a partner with Vandeventer Black and concentrates his law practice in bankruptcy and debtor and creditor matters. He has over 20 years experience advising clients and negotiating on complex credit, bankruptcy and insolvency related matters.

In the area of bankruptcy, Mike works primarily with creditors. His clients range from banks and international corporations to small businesses and professionals. His broad work with debtors includes representing large corporations and small businesses as well as individuals in Chapter 11 proceedings, including debt restructuring and liquidation.

Mike works with clients on pre and post bankruptcy matters. His pre-bankruptcy work includes foreclosure on collateral, enforcement of judgments, evaluation of bankruptcy risks, documentation to minimize risks, loan collateralization and loan workouts and negotiation. His post-bankruptcy experience includes relief from the automatic stay, filing proofs of claim, enforcement of rights to cash collateral and adequate protection, enforcement and collection of administrative and post-petition claims, defense of preference claims, prosecution of dischargeablilty and discharge complaints, negotiation of bankruptcy plans of reorganization, and advice and representation with respect to commercial transactions with bankrupt parties (for example, purchase of assets and establishing lending relationships).

Mike is licensed to practice in Virginia. He received a B.A. from St. Mary’s College and a J.D. from The College of William & Mary School of Law, where he was Associate Editor for Professional Articles on the Law Review.

Mike is listed in the “Best Lawyers in America” in the field of Bankruptcy Law and recognized in the 1999-2000 registry of Strathmore’s Who’s Who. He was selected as one of Virginia Business’ “Virginia Legal Elite” for 2003 in the field of Bankruptcy Law.

Mike is currently Vice-Chairman of St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children in Norfolk.
