Willcox is an attorney with Vandeventer Black and concentrates his practice in the fields of design, construction, business and commercial law, professional liability defense and alternative dispute resolution. He represents architects, engineers, construction managers, owners and contractors in a variety of design and construction-related disputes and contract negotiations. His prior architectural experience is an asset to his clients and extends across continental U.S.
Willcox received his B. Arch., (with highest honors) from Pratt Institute, where he was a Fisher Architectural Scholar. He received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was a Senior Editor for the Virginia Environmental Law Journal and an Elsie Hughes Cabell and Society of the Cincinnati Scholar. Prior to starting a second career in law, Willcox spent 13 years as a designer and project manager for prominent architecture firms in Virginia and New York, and as an historic preservation specialist. He joined Vandeventer Black in 2008 after serving as head of the construction practice for another prominent Virginia law firm.
Willcox regularly speaks on has many published articles on design and construction law topics. He serves on the Construction Management Association of America’s Legal Counsel Committee, the Engineers Joint Contract Documents Committee, the ConsensusDOCS Contract Documents Committee, and the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia Design-Build/PPP Committee. He is a member of the ABA Forum on the Construction Industry. Willcox has been recognized as one of Virginia’s “Legal Elite” among civil litigators by Virginia Business magazine.
Some of his notable engagements include: defending an engineer against $15 million in claims relating to groundwater contamination; defending an architect against claims of defective design and contract administration services for three new public schools; serving as counsel for the owner/developer of a luxury resort/spa/convention center completed approximately $400 million over budget; defending an engineer against $14 million in claims relating to the design and contract administration of a bridge/tunnel; defending an architect and its consulting engineer in a total loss, commercial building fire case; and drafting and negotiating design services and construction contracts for a wide variety of private and public projects, ranging from a $65 million dollar condominium project to a high-tech federal research facility.
