Bill is managing partner of Vandeventer Black and concentrates his law practice in construction, alternative dispute resolution and public contracts matters. In the construction field, he has vast experience ranging from highway projects and power plants to airports and marine terminals. Bill’s engineering background coupled with his license as a professional engineer and hands-on field experience are valued by his clients. He is highly respected in the areas of claim preparation, negotiation, litigation and alternative dispute resolution regionally, nationally and internationally. Bill’s public contracts experience extends to the public private partnership arena, and he has been involved in the preparation and review of several public private proposals.
Bill received a B.S. in Civil Engineering and a J.D. (magna cum laude) from Syracuse University and a M.S. in Environmental Science from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He is a licensed professional engineer and is licensed to practice in Virginia and New York.
Bill’s extensive training and experience in mediation, arbitration and conflict management make him one of the area’s most seasoned mediators. He is distinguished as an arbitrator and mediator for the American Arbitration Association and has conducted numerous ADR proceedings in that capacity. He has also worked on the other side of the fence as an advocate for clients in both arbitration and mediation proceedings. Bill has been involved with claims and disputes ranging from $10,000 to $70 million representing general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, owners and professional service organizations. He has represented contractors in structured negotiations with the Army Corps of Engineers, private mediations with subcontractors and before the Virginia and North Carolina Departments of Transportation. Bill is certified by the Virginia Supreme Court to serve as a mediator for Circuit Court cases. In addition, he has completed the elite AAA Construction Arbitrator Training. Bill speaks across the region on Alternative Dispute Resolution.
He was selected as one of Virginia Business’ “Virginia Legal Elite” in 2005 in the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
