Trey concentrates his practice in criminal defense, immigration, and business litigation. As a former prosecutor, he routinely handles criminal cases in federal and Virginia courts, defending clients in matters ranging from white collar fraud to homicide to narcotics offenses. Trey also advises clients facing criminal or regulatory investigations to help avoid charges before they are filed. Trey’s cases in this area have included investigations of contractor fraud and false claims, mortgage fraud, trademark infringement, immigration fraud, environmental and maritime violations, and tax fraud. Trey has represented numerous clients served with federal grand jury subpoenas.
Trey also works on Vandeventer Black’s team of immigration attorneys, handling deportation cases in immigration court. Trey has experience in deportation defense, asylum, waivers, adjustment of status, and criminal consequences. Trey has used his criminal law experience to secure sentence reductions in state court and sentence commutations from the governor to eliminate immigration consequences resulting from criminal convictions.
Trey also represents clients in private litigation and in disputes with public agencies. He has tried numerous jury trials as lead counsel in federal and Virginia courts in both criminal cases and complex civil litigation. In one case, Trey secured a $450,000 verdict in a civil jury trial as lead trial counsel in an employment dispute. He has appeared before numerous agencies, federal and state, and in addition to trial work, he has argued before the Virginia Supreme Court, Virginia Court of Appeals, and the Federal Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Before joining Vandeventer Black, Trey served six years as a prosecutor for the Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. He also served as a legislative aide on Capitol Hill for U.S. Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell for four years, becoming well acquainted with the regulatory and administrative processes of government. His legislative duties focused on Senate affairs, transportation, labor, and government affairs.
Trey earned his B.A. from The College of William & Mary and his J.D. from the William & Mary School of Law, where he was the recipient of the Order of the Coif, graduating 9th in his class. He is licensed to practice in Virginia and is admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the Federal Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was selected as one of Virginia Business’ “Virginia Legal Elite” in 2005-2008 in the field of Criminal Law.
