Ethan is an attorney with Vandeventer Black and concentrates his practice in general and commercial litigation and criminal defense.
Ethan earned his J.D. (cum laude) from American University, Washington College of Law. In law school, he was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society and twice participated in the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition. In 2005, his team won the United States portion of the Jessup Competition and placed 3rd in the International Rounds out of over 600 law schools competing world-wide from over 85 countries; he was among the Top 50 Oralists internationally.
He earned a B.A. (summa cum laude) in Philosophy and German from Emory University and a M.Phil. from the University of Memphis. At Emory, he participated in the Student Abroad Program in conjunction with the University of Vienna and completed the Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache. Ethan also pitched for the Emory baseball team. Ethan was awarded a Fulbright Commission English Language Teaching Assistantship following his graduation from Emory and spent an academic year in Linz, Austria.
Ethan served as a Law Clerk for the Circuit Court of the City of Virginia Beach. He also served as a Judicial Intern for The Honorable Judge Richard W. Roberts, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and as a Research Analyst for the Public International Law and Policy Group, a global pro bono law firm that provides free legal assistance to developing countries involved in conflict.
Ethan is admitted to practice in Virginia, the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Virginia and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the Norfolk & Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Virginia and American Bar Associations (International Law and Commercial Litigation Sections), Federal Bar Association (Appellate Law, Federal Litigation and International Law Sections), as well as the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys. He is Membership Coordinator of the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Committee and serves on the Board of Directors of For Art's Sake.
Ethan is also fluent in German.
