Richard is a partner with Vandeventer Black and concentrates his law practice in commercial litigation with a particular focus on products liability defense, as well as commercial and private property disputes.
Richard is an experienced litigator in both state and federal court, which includes all stages of litigation: discovery, motions, trial and appeal. As first chair, he has tried numerous cases to judges and juries. His clients range from international manufacturing companies to small professional partnerships.
Richard received a B.A. from Boston University and a J.D. from The College of William & Mary School of Law, where he was on the William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review and published the article “When is Broad Too Broad? Environmental Legislation and Interpretation of Government Liability at Federal Facilities.” Richard is a 2002 graduate of the Sorenson Institute of Political Leadership.
He currently practices before the Virginia state trial and appellate courts as well as the Virginia federal trial and appellate courts.
Richard received the Virginia State Bar’s prestigious R. Edwin Burnette Jr. Young Lawyer of the Year award in 2003, the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association’s 2002 Walter E. Hoffman Community Service Award and the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division 2006 Sandra P. Thompson Award for outstanding and long-term service. He was selected as one of Hampton Roads’ Top Forty Under Forty for 2002 by Inside Business magazine and as one of “Virginia’s Legal Elite” Young Lawyers by Virginia Business magazine in 2004. Richard was recognized as a 2005 Virginia Bar Association Community Servant Charter Member.
