Jim is a partner with Vandeventer Black and concentrates his law practice in products and professional liability, construction, toxic torts, business, commercial and insurance matters, as well as appellate practices and procedures. Jim is a seasoned trial and appellate attorney in all phases of litigation in state and federal courts throughout Virginia. His considerable and broad trial and appellate experience extends to a variety of areas, including matters involving products liability, professional liability, construction defect, transportation, premises liability, intellectual property, commercial disputes, general personal injury, catastrophic injury, wrongful death and insurance coverage. In addition, Jim’s commercial litigation experience includes matters involving patent infringement, theft of trade secrets, fraud, construction defects, breach of contract, indemnity and suretyship. His skills also include litigating matters involving a diverse array of consumer and industrial products and construction materials. Jim represents consumer product manufacturers, construction and design professionals, trucking companies, major retailers and general liability insurers.

He received a B.A. from the University of Virginia and a J.D. (cum laude) from the University of Richmond T.C. Williams School of Law.

Jim is an adjunct professor of law at the University of Richmond School of Law, where he teaches trial advocacy (1995 - present). He also serves on the Boyd-Graves Conference, working with Virginia’s best trial lawyers and judges to improve civil practice and procedure in Virginia (2000 - present). Jim has presented numerous seminars touching on all areas of civil litigation, including litigation involving the use of EIFS/synthetic stucco, effective advocacy in mediation, using and challenging experts under Daubert, trial of wrongful death cases, effective and efficient preparation and trial of personal injury cases, and use of computer animated graphics in the courtroom.

Jim’s notable engagements include serving as trial counsel for numerous consumer product manufacturers; obtaining defense verdicts or summary judgment in several construction defect and product liability cases; and briefing and arguing numerous appeals in the Supreme Court of Virginia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
