Vandeventer Black's Summer Associate Program has operated since the 1970s. Although the program has evolved throughout the years, it has stayed consistent in its mission to provide first and second year law students with a realistic perspective into the practice of law at Vandeventer Black. The focus of our program is to provide meaningful work opportunities, out-of-office legal experiences, and opportunities to network and socialize, while simultaneously fostering the growth and development of summer associates from 1Ls to 2Ls, and from 2Ls to full-time associates at the firm. The success of our program is evidenced by the significant number of attorneys at Vandeventer Black who were once summer associates here. Our program currently is operated by a three-person Recruiting Committee, chaired by hiring partner, Brian L. Sykes. In addition to Brian, associates Gretchen M. Ostroff and Michael P. Giordano serve on the committee, which acts as a liaison between summer associates and the rest of the firm. Summer associates receive training, work allocation and mentoring from the committee. A key focus of our program is varied, meaningful work. During a typical summer, summer associates receive assignments from all of the firm's many practice areas and are encouraged to work with as many different attorneys as possible. In addition to accommodating known areas of interest, our program's work allocation scheme offers summer associates an introduction to new areas of practice they may not have considered exploring. Vandeventer Black's Summer Associate Program emphasizes the exposure of summer associates to the real world applications of the work they perform in the office. In addition to researching and drafting legal memoranda, assisting with deposition preparations and the myriad other "real work" opportunities available as part of our program, summer associates are encouraged to shadow attorneys to client meetings, depositions, and court, so that they can experience, firsthand, the impact of their work product outside our office walls. |
