Firm Profile

Vandeventer Black was founded in Norfolk, Virginia, over a century ago.  As the legal needs of the region grew, the Firm expanded to serve the needs of our clients.  We currently have branch offices in Richmond, Hamburg, Germany and Kitty Hawk, Roanoke Island, and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Our attorneys represent an international roster of clients including manufacturing, health care, banking, broadcasting, construction, public utilities and maritime. The Firm maintains a worldwide network of resources through associated firms.

The founders of Vandeventer Black were leaders in the region as well as in the legal field.  Prior members of the Firm include John W. Eggleston, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia, and Barron F. Black, the founder of Norfolk’s public library system and former Rector of the University of Virginia.  Members of the Firm have served in Virginia’s House of Delegates and as President of the Virginia Bar Association.

Vandeventer Black is committed to continuing its leadership in both the community and the legal profession. Our attorneys serve as members on the boards of directors for various area banks, hospitals, colleges, museums and other community organizations.  The Firm is committed to continuously developing our areas of practice and is an active member and supporter of the regional economic development alliances and associated international organizations.

Our attorneys are active members of legal organizations, including the Norfolk & Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Richmond, Wake County, Dare County, Virginia and American Bar Associations, as well as many State Bars across the country, and practice-related sections of those organizations.  The firm boasts two attorneys who have received the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association’s Walter B. Hoffman Community Service Award, as well as an attorney who has earned the distinguished Eggleston/I’Anson Professionalism Award. A significant number of our attorneys have been recognized by their peers as being among the best in their practice areas.

In certain fields, such as environmental and construction law, several attorneys are also mechanical, chemical or civil engineers and architects and others hold advanced degrees in their areas of practice, such as tax.  Our resident partners in the Outer Banks are Board Certified Specialists in Real Property Law - Business, Commercial and Industrial Transactions.

For many years the firm has lectured at the College of William & Mary School of Law, Washington & Lee School of Law, Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute, Tulane University and the University of Virginia.

Our attorneys head advisory groups and task forces related to their practice areas and apprise clients of changes in the law through seminars, speeches and newsletters.

Our founders instilled in us the values to which we remain committed - professional integrity, responsive service and superior results.  It is with those values that we accept the challenges of the new millennium.
