Vandeventer Black’s Commercial Litigation team focuses on disputes specifically related to the course of doing everyday business, including commercial transactions, real estate matters, and tax and estate issues. Our multidisciplinary approach provides our clients with a broad range of industry specific legal knowledge.

We represent every facet of business and are regionally known in the areas of construction, public contracts, maritime, real estate, land use, condemnation, utilities, environmental, municipal and utilities litigation and dispute resolution.

The firm’s general commercial practice includes fidelity and guaranty suretyship, contracts, securities, loan workouts, creditors’ rights, UCC, commercial torts, performance and payment construction bonds, truth in lending and collection proceedings. Vandeventer Black also has a strong reputation in tax and ERISA litigation as well as sales, use and local business tax issues.

In the area of real estate litigation, our attorneys are experienced in condemnation/land use, title disputes, development, Riparian rights, lease disputes and community association representation.

Our labor and employment litigation team is experienced in civil rights defense, wrongful discharge suits, benefits litigation, wage and hour disputes, disability discrimination, workers’ compensation defense and OSHA/VOSH litigation.

Our attorneys are licensed in Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, District of Columbia, New York, and Maryland, with extensive experience in state and federal courts on the East and Gulf Coasts of the U.S.  Our federal court litigation experience includes multi-state litigation. We are involved in appellate practice in the First, Second, Fourth and Fifth Circuits and the U.S. Supreme Court.  We appear before all administrative forums, including the Boards of Contract Appeals, General Accounting Office, Office of Workers’ Compensation, Office of Administrative Law Judges, National Labor Relations Board, EEOC, Department of Labor, and other state and federal agencies.

The Commercial Litigation group focuses on resolving cases early through motion practice, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. Because of Vandeventer Black’s depth and experience, we regularly counsel clients on early settlements for meritorious cases as well as questionable claims that call for trial defense. We understand the importance of preserving our clients’ image and work hand-in-hand with clients to address the issues surrounding their unique situation and to achieve their goals.
